There will be plenty of time in the coming months to speculate on how the larger parties will fair next May but a little gem (from my point of view) buried in the Scotsman's lead story yesterday - the polling results for the SSP and the Sheridan-led Solidarity party:
"The poll gives the SSP 3 per cent and 4 per cent on the two ballots - down only one point on the constituency vote - while Solidarity, Tommy Sheridan's new party, has dropped off the scale completely, registering so few supporters it has not achieved even 1 per cent in either vote. This suggests the SSP may return one or two MSPs, if it can concentrate its vote in specific areas, but that Solidarity will get nowhere near Holyrood next May"
I'm as alarmed as any right-thinking person would be at the momentum that appears to be building in the SNP's campaign - but if one of the side effects of a resurgent nationalism and disaffection with Labour is that kid on parties like the SSP are squeezed out of Scottish politics altogether then at least some good will have come of it.
