Two councillors have defected to the Scottish Conservatives in the last week. Today Denis Male, councillor for Langholm and Upper Eskdale joined the Tory group on Dumfries and Galloway Council, taking the Tories up to 13 members. This now makes the Tories level pegging with Labour who currently run the Council.
Last week the Independent councillor for Canonbie and Kirtle, Ian Lindsay, announced that he too was joining the Tory group.
Annable Goldie welcomed this news saying:
“This is more evidence that the length and breadth of the country, it is the Scottish Conservatives that are in touch with the everyday concerns of people, with policies relevant to their lives. It further proves how the party is changing, is seen to have changed, and the hope we offer for the future.”
On the basis of yesterday's poll not quite sure that Annabel has hit the nail on the head. I suspect that what is happening here is that Independent councillors have seen the writing on the wall as a result of the change to the electoral system for local elections and know that they will be better placed to remain in post if they stand under one of the party banners.
